What
does Gouyasse mean ?
During the fourth week-end of the month of August, Ath vibrates
with
rhythm, tradition and folklore. On the Saturday, after his marriage
celebrated at the service of vespers, the giant Goliath, popularly known
as Gouyasse, confronts the shepherd David in single-handed combat.
The following day there is a parade consisting of a number of giants
dancing to the sound of brass bands, of carnival floats, and groups in
traditional costume, which crosses the town. Dating back to the Middle
Ages, this tradition has become enriched by the passing of the centuries. |
